CHAPTER FIVE

MIMI

I hurry back toward the beach house, tears in my eyes.

I should never have gotten involved with a movie star.

I’m twenty-six years old, and until now, nobody has ever known my secret. Not even a romantic partner. And within two minutes of meeting Brandon my secret is out. First, he sees me playing on the movie set, and now someone else catches me at it.

Plus, I could see how Brandon was looking at me back there, like I was too much for him. Some men just can’t handle the fact that I’m an expert at something. The fact I can save lives makes them feel small, I guess.

‘Wait up!’ Brandon calls, hurrying after me, as the guy we rescued is tended to by an ambulance crew.

‘Can you call me a cab?’ I say abruptly. ‘I should get back to the set.’

‘But you’re all sandy and wet,’ says Brandon. ‘At least come into the house and get cleaned up. I’ve got a nice fluffy towel for you, Peach.’

Peach? That’s new.

‘No,’ I say, sticking out my bottom lip. ‘I’m not your Peach. I’m not anyone’s Peach. And I’m not a baby, either.’

‘I know that,’ Brandon replies, catching up with me. ‘You’re the most capable woman I ever met. You were incredible out there. But you’re also a Little. And Littles need special looking after.’

‘Not by you,’ I reply, still unable to rein in my horror at being caught. ‘Littles only need looking after by their Daddies.’

‘You’re right,’ says Brandon gently. ‘Listen, I’m really sorry for what happened back there. That poor guy must have been dragged a long way in the current. It’s the first time I’ve seen another human being on this beach, without me personally inviting them here. It’s normally completely private.’

I feel my teeth un-gritting slightly. It’s really not Brandon’s fault that someone almost drowned in his waters today. Plus, he’s right. I am wet and sandy. Cleaning up sounds sensible.

‘Alright,’ I say. ‘I’ll come inside. Dry off. And you’re soaking too.’ I look at Brandon, taking him in properly for the first time since the incident. ‘You’re probably a little in shock,’ I tell him. ‘Having to swim out to someone’s rescue. That must have been scary. Are you sure you’re okay? Need a sugary tea or something?’

Brandon smiles as we walk into his beach house. ‘I like that you care about me.’

He leads me up to the bathroom and runs a bubble bath. ‘You make yourself at home. Take a long, soapy bath. I’ll go shower in my en-suite. No rush, okay? Relax and unwind.’ He squeezes my shoulder, and a thrill runs through me. Suddenly, his eyes widen. ‘Oh shit, I almost forgot.’ He rushes out of the room and returns with a few bath toys. ‘Here. For you.’

I look at the toys excitedly. There’s sprinkler cups, a water wheel, foam puzzle shapes…

And then I remember what happened out on the beach.

‘I… I don’t know,’ I say. ‘I still feel a bit weird after getting outed.
